Revision: revised with a bounded paid assessment, evidence-based portfolio review, collaborator access and handover requirements.

Hire a Shopify developer for the work your store needs. Configuring a catalog, changing a Liquid theme and connecting an inventory system require different evidence. Start with a short brief, examine the candidate's contribution to comparable work, and use a small paid assessment when uncertainty remains.

This guide focuses on choosing and evaluating the person doing the work. Our Shopify website development guide covers implementation planning, while the online store planning guide helps define the wider project.

Match the role to the actual task

Write down what must change, who will maintain it and how you will accept the result. “Improve our Shopify store” is too broad to assess. “Let an editor change product-specific delivery information without editing theme code” gives a candidate something concrete to discuss.

Different store requirements call for different experience
WorkRelevant skillsEvidence to request
Store configurationCatalog setup, navigation, store settings and app configuration.A comparable setup checklist, data validation and merchant handover.
Theme developmentLiquid, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and editor-friendly theme changes.A focused code change with mobile, keyboard and theme-editor checks.
Apps and integrationsAPI permissions, data mapping, background work and failure recovery. An explained integration with retries, duplicate handling and operational monitoring.
Headless storefrontCustom storefront architecture, commerce APIs, deployment and observability.End-to-end storefront responsibility, including cart behavior, failures and ongoing operation.

These are assessment categories, not formal certifications. A strong theme developer may be the right hire without having built a headless storefront. Conversely, an integration specialist's backend experience does not establish that they can deliver accessible product-page interactions.

Choose a freelancer, agency or internal hire according to continuity and coordination needs. With an agency, establish who will perform and review the work. With an individual, agree coverage and documentation if that person becomes unavailable. Evaluate the proposed working arrangement alongside technical skill.

Ask what the candidate contributed

Choose one relevant portfolio project and ask for the original problem, the candidate's responsibility, the implementation decision and how it was checked. A store logo or screenshot cannot establish who designed, configured, coded or maintained each part. Ask which elements came from an existing theme or app.

Useful evidence might be an authorized code sample, a redacted change review, a demonstration in a sample store or a client reference that confirms the work. Do not ask candidates to disclose someone else's private repository or customer data. If confidentiality limits evidence, use the same paid sample task for shortlisted candidates.

Ask for one defect they investigated and one tradeoff they made. “What happened when product data was missing?” often reveals more than a broad claim about conversion optimization. Treat claimed performance or revenue improvements as unverified unless the candidate can explain the measurement and their contribution.

A Shopify Partner account supports platform collaboration; it is not, by itself, proof of expertise. Shopify's collaborator guidance also makes clear that displayed partner details do not guarantee work quality. Judge the evidence for the role.

Use a small, paid theme assessment

The following proposed exercise suits a theme-development role. Agree payment, a time limit, deliverables and review criteria in advance. Use a separate test store containing fictional products and an unpublished theme. Do not grant production access or copy customers, orders, credentials or licensed assets you are not entitled to use.

Brief: add a delivery-information block to an existing product page. Its heading must be editable in the theme editor. The body comes from a product metafield; when that value is blank, hide the entire block, including the heading and empty spacing. Let the merchant add, move or remove the block within the supplied theme's supported product-section structure.

Supply the theme version and three sample products: one with a short delivery note, one with no note and one with long text. Specify the metafield definition and expected type. Shopify's dynamic source documentation describes connecting compatible product data to section and block settings. The candidate should inspect the supplied theme and explain the smallest suitable implementation.

Include explicit boundaries: no paid app installation, checkout changes, theme publication or unrelated redesign. If the theme cannot support the proposed structure without a larger change, the candidate should identify that before expanding the task. This is a hiring exercise, not a request for unpaid production work.

Request a preview, a concise code diff, instructions for the editor and a record of checks and known limitations. Agree how any assistance or tools used should be disclosed. Assess whether the candidate can explain and maintain the result.

Score observable behavior, then discuss the gaps

The illustrative rubric below totals 100 points. It helps reviewers use the same criteria; it is not an industry benchmark or an automatic hiring cutoff. Share it before the task. A serious access or security breach overrides the score.

Suggested scoring for this specific paid assessment
CriterionMaximum pointsWhat the reviewer should verify
Required behavior30Correct product data, editable heading, movable block and clean handling of missing values.
Usability20Readable narrow-screen layout, sensible heading structure and no disruption to keyboard use.
Maintainability20A limited, understandable diff using the supplied theme's conventions.
Verification15Evidence for all three products, editor behavior and regression checks.
Communication and handover15Clear assumptions, scope decisions, setup instructions and stated limitations.

Open the preview yourself. Change the heading, remove and restore the block, and switch between the sample products. Inspect long text on a narrow screen. Tab through the existing product controls and confirm they still work. A static information block should not gain unnecessary keyboard stops.

Review the diff alongside the demonstration. Check that unrelated settings, assets and templates were not replaced. Shopify's Theme Check can lint Liquid and JSON; its output is useful evidence but does not establish that the visual result or merchant workflow is correct.

Discuss missing checks before deciding. A candidate who identifies a limitation precisely provides different evidence from one who claims everything passed without inspecting it. For an integration role, design a separate assessment around that work; this theme task cannot prove integration expertise.

Grant production access only for agreed work

When an engagement begins, use an appropriate named account rather than sharing the store owner's password. For an external Shopify Partner, collaborator access lets you review the requested role and permissions. Shopify requires collaborators to enable two-step authentication.

Confirm the requester and grant only permissions needed for the agreed task. Have the developer explain unexpected access requests. Theme work does not automatically justify customer exports, financial administration or unrelated app access. Review permissions as scope changes and remove collaborator access when the work ends.

Keep publishing authority and the release process explicit. A developer should know which environment is for review, who approves publication and how the previous version will be restored if necessary. Record any separately granted app or infrastructure access so it is included in handover and removal.

Compare estimates against written milestones

Give shortlisted candidates the same brief using the software requirements template. State the current theme, required pages, sample data, existing apps, decision owner and acceptance checks. Separate included work from optional changes.

Ask each estimate to identify assumptions: access availability, design readiness, content quality, app compatibility, migration needs and the number of review rounds. Compare whether testing, setup, documentation and post-release fixes are included. A lower total with missing responsibilities is not directly comparable.

Use milestones with reviewable outputs: scope and approach, working preview, acceptance checks, approved release and handover. Agree how new requirements affect the estimate. Keep merchant review time visible; development cannot finish an unresolved design or business decision independently.

Make handover part of completion

Receive the final source changes, theme version, setup instructions, metafield definitions, testing notes and known limitations. Record who owns the repository and relevant accounts, which theme and app licenses are needed, who pays recurring charges and which customizations may need attention during updates. Custom code does not remove third-party licensing obligations.

Have the merchant edit the content without coaching, and have another authorized developer explain the change from its documentation. Agree the support window, defect reporting route and responsibility for future theme or app changes. These checks make the deliverable maintainable after the original developer leaves.

Our e-commerce development service covers store and integration work. A useful starting brief names the task, shows representative data and defines what successful handover should allow your team to do.
